History & Heritage Geelong has a long and colourful history. Its original inhabitants were members of various clans of the Wathaurong tribe who had inhabited the region for more than 25,000 years before white explorers arrived.

Eastern & Botanic Gardens  Geelong's historic Botanic Gardens are centrally located within Eastern Park and have recently undergone a $2 million redevelopment. The work has created a new 21st Century Garden with native plants against a background of Australian colours, and effectively doubled the size of the gardens. There are also more prominent entrances and a new drive, inviting visitors to come in and explore.  

Geelong Wine Region  In terms of sunshine and temperature, Geelong lies about half way between Bordeaux and Burgundy. Not surprising then that over 20 wineries are open for tasting.

Food & Wine in the Geelong Region  Sample fresh seafood and local produce accompanied by the well-known wines of the Geelong Wine Region.

Geelong Events  The Geelong Region hosts a culturally diverse range of events year 'round.  Click on the following links for further information;

  • Royal Geelong Show  The Royal Geelong Show is the biggest four day show in country Victoria.  People come from all walks of life, growers of produce and animals, creators of craft, artists, musicians, entertainers and many more to meet, show and share ideas.  Celebrate with fireworks on Friday and Saturday nights, with displays and entertainment galore.
  • Geelong Highland Gathering  The Geelong Highland Gathering is Victoria's largest and most diverse celebration of traditional Scottish culture, including pipe bands, Highland and country dancing, heavy games, Scottish dog breeds and horses and cattle, re-enactment groups, clans/genealogy, fair/market, archery, wood-chop, children's activities, a great day for the whole family.
  • Shout Out Geelong 24 Hour Filmmaking Festival  The world's most unique filmmaking event hits Geelong this September when entrants race against the clock to produce a short film (maximum seven minutes) in just 24-hours with only in camera editing allowed.
  • Skandia Geelong Week See yachts set sail and celebrate all things nautical at Australia's largest sailing regatta. More than a yachting event, Skandia Geelong Week is the Melbourne Cup of the sailing world.
    More than 100,000 visitors will head to the Geelong Waterfront for the free three-day shoreside program featuring more than 60 live performances on two waterfront stages, art exhibitions, aerobatic displays, fireworks, gourmet food and wine, children's entertainment and activities, a marine trade show and art and craft markets.
  • Geelong Vintage Rally One of the biggest and best displays of restored and working Vintage Machinery in Australia.
  • Toast to the Coast  Toast to the Coast is the Geelong region's annual festival devoted to wine, food and music. It celebrates the excellent cool climate wines produced locally while showcasing a range of other local complimentary talents.
  • Pako Festa  Pako Festa is a unique annual event with a strong blending of cultures, community spirit and involvement. The understanding of each other’s cultures is an essential element of our multicultural Geelong and Australia. Pako Festa is Victoria’s premier multicultural event.
  • 12 Australian Masters Games  This will be the first time the event has been held in Geelong and with an estimated 10,000 participants, it will be the biggest participant sporting event ever held in regional Victoria. The Confederation of Australian Sport runs and manages the event, which is held biennially in different states around Australia. The Australian Masters Games provides the opportunity for participation for people over the age of 30, regardless of their background or ability to participate in over 60 sports.
  • Geelong International Airshow  The Australian International Airshow is the largest and most comprehensive event of its kind staged in the Southern Hemisphere.  The event features a six-hour flying display daily, the new-look Boeing Friday Flying Display with its spectacular Night Alight Finale as well as numerous ground exhibits, a flyers market and other attractions. 

Great Ocean Road Geelong is the gateway to the Great Ocean Road Touring Route.  Winding along the western coast of Victoria, the Great Ocean Road offers stunning ocean views, beachside activities, laid back coastal towns and maritime villages. You will find limitless opportunities to leave everyday life behind.
