Melbourne

Melbourne is Victoria’s capital and provides non-stop activity and 24 hour entertainment. There is an almost endless range of places to eat, things to do and places to go. Melbourne is renowned for its quality restaurants, theatres, galleries, museums, shopping, gardens and major attractions.

Euroa

With a population of 4300 and 148km north of Melbourne, the historic township of Euroa is nestled at the foot of the Strathbogie Ranges and has a rich history as one of the nations leading wool growing communities. Today Eurora is regarded as the centre of Victoria’s thoroughbred horse industry, and also attracts tourists following the trail of the infamous bushranger Ned Kelly, who together with his band of outlaws dubbed the Kelly Gang, robbed the Euroa Bank in 1878.

Glenrowan

Glenrowan is a quiet little town between Benalla and Wangaratta that blazed into Australian history in 1880 as the site of the famous siege where Ned Kelly and his gang made their last stand. Ned Kelly is undoubtedly Australia's most notorious bushranger and an important part of Australian folklore. Many attractions around the town bring together the various aspects of the enduring legend, making it easy to learn more about the man and his infamous gang.

On Saturday, 27 June 1880, the Kelly Gang took 60 hostages in the Glenrowan Inn. A siege followed and in the ensuing battle with police three gang members were killed. Remarkably, Kelly escaped but was shot in the legs and arrested some hours later. He was tried, convicted of murder and hanged on 11 November 1880 at the Old Melbourne Gaol.

But there is more to Glenrowan than bushrangers, with opportunities to sample fine regional wines and delicious local produce.

Rutherglen

Enterprising winemakers have been taking advantage of the fertile land and mild climate around Rutherglen since the early 1800s, making this one of the oldest wine-growing areas in Australia. Rutherglen is renowned for producing robust red wines that cellar well for many years, as well as crisp, modern style whites. However, the region is best known for its superb fortified wines, especially muscats.

Once a major gold mining town, Rutherglen's history is reflected in the historic buildings now housing antique and bric-a-brac shops, tea rooms and restaurants.

The new Rutherglen Wine Experience and Visitor Information Centre is the starting point for a great holiday in this region. Learn about winemaking, taste premium wines, relax with a cup of coffee or dine in the gourmet, licensed café. Find out all you need to know about the 20 magnificent wineries that make up the Winemakers of Rutherglen, as well as accommodation, dining and regional highlights.

Albury - Wodonga

A thriving modern city with a leisurely country style, Albury Wodonga is a charming mix of stately heritage buildings, established parks and gardens and tree-lined streets. The Murray River flows between the twin cities, winding through a magnificent unspoiled landscape of rolling valleys, hills and lush farmlands. Once a busy trade route for paddle steamers, the river is now very much a part of Albury-Wodonga's relaxed and attractive lifestyle.

The city’s rich history and pioneer heritage is reflected in the grand architecture of its buildings, most notably the restored Albury Railway Station. Originally completed in 1882, it remains one of the most imposing and significant country stations in Australia.

Discover the many different local museums and art galleries, and enjoy the fine wines, gourmet foods and abundant local produce. Albury- Wodonga is also widely renowned for its outdoor recreation opportunities, from the city’s first-class sporting facilities to some of the best freshwater fishing in Victoria in the surrounding rivers and the popular water sports destination of nearby Lake Hume.

Attractions

Lake Hume is the ideal place for all water sports and leisure activities, as well as picnics, relaxation and sightseeing.

Albury Regional Museum is the perfect place to learn more about the Albury Wodonga region. The museum features both permanent as well as travelling exhibitions.

The Albury Botanic Gardens are located at the western end of Albury’s main shopping area on 4 hectares. The gardens feature an impressive plant collection of both native and exotic origins.

Wonga Wetlands is a five minute drive from the centre of Albury along the Riverina Highway (Howlong/Corowa Road).

Wineries and Breweries Whether you’re a wine connoisseur or collector, someone who simply enjoys a glass or two with friends, or are just plain curious, then prepare yourself to experience some truly unique sensory pleasures. North eastern Victoria and southern NSW are blessed with the greatest diversity of altitude, soil types, rainfall and temperature in the country. This provided far-sighted winemakers with the rare opportunity of growing vines in cool climate alpine valleys, on hot plains, in rich sandy loams, granite-based soils and volcanic soils, to produce extremely different styles of wines in a relatively small area.

Albury Racecourse The annual Albury Gold cup held during March each year draws record crowds.
